Alternatively from Serbo-Croatian bok (“side, flank”), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *bokъ (“side”). However, Svane casts doubt over the Slavic source, owing to its divergent meaning (the Proto-Slavic term denotes parts of the physique rather than terrain) as well
